A nurse has claimed that teenage pregnancy documents are 'incredibly gendered'

A heated debate was sparked on GB News on the gender-based language associated with giving birth, after a nurse claimed "not all people who have babies might call themselves a woman".

Speaking on the School Nursing Uncovered podcast, Tikki Harrold claimed some of the language she reviewed on teenage pregnancy documents was "incredibly gendered".

The comments made on the podcast, which is sponsored by the NHS, has sparked a debate on whether those who identify as men can have children.

Appearing on GB News, commentators Mike Parry and Amy Nickell-Turner shared their thoughts on the issue, as Parry stated that "biological men cannot give birth".

Sharing her own reaction to the latest transgender debate, host Dawn Neesom said the debate "annoys her" and transgender issues within the healthcare service can "cause women's health to suffer" because of the "confusion of language in healthcare".

Asked if she believes men can give birth, Nickell-Turner agreed that the issue can affect women's health, but claimed that on a wider scale, maternity services are "terrible" at the moment, and it is "pretty dangerous" for anyone to be giving birth.

Sharing the story of transgender man Freddy McConnell, who was catapulted into the public eye with his film Seahorse, Nickell-Turner argued his case and claimed that a "legal man can give birth and have a baby".

The film documents McConnell's journey to parenthood after giving birth naturally as a transgender man.

Nickell-Turner added: "It's not true to say a man hasn't given birth because Freddy McConnell is a man by law."

In disagreement with Nickell-Turner, Parry fought back and argued that in McConnell's case, he "was a legal man, but not a biological man".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Parry told Nickell-Turner: "The question is straightforward. Can men give birth? Well, a biological man can't give birth unless he goes to some clinic in Switzerland and they reconstruct his body."

Nickell-Turner defended her point, claiming that "under law, McConnell is a man". She said: "He's a man, right? He's transitioned to a man. The law recognises him as a man. So if we wanted to complete the sentence, transgender men can give birth."

Dawn recalled working with McConnell and said although he is a "lovely man to work with", he is "biologically a woman".

She responded: "I live in Tower Hamlets and a lot of the health care notes there are written to be gender neutral. There's a lot of women in my area who don't have English as a first language. It's confusing for us. This is my issue, I think women's healthcare is suffering because we are afraid to use the word woman."

Parry sided with Dawn on her argument, and recalled Caitlyn Jenner's view that a "trans man cannot be a woman".

Parry fumed: "If Caitlyn Jenner says it, I think that absolutely defines it. Instead of anybody wanting to accept that, they go off into literally reams and reams and reams of cross talk and this and that.

"I think this is a huge amount of acceptance, understanding, tolerance, but when somebody asks me the question, can men give birth, I can't see how anybody can possibly answer in the affirmative."
